Einstein’s Big Blunder

Where did the Universe come from?

Part 1: Einstein’s Big Blunder

100 years ago, Albert Einstein published three papers that rocked the world.  These papers proved the existence of the atom, introduced the theory of relativity, and described quantum mechanics.

Pretty good debut for a 26 year old scientist, huh?

His equations for relativity indicated that the universe was expanding.  This bothered him, because if it was expanding, it must have had a beginning and a beginner.

Since neither of these appealed to him, Einstein introduced a ‘fudge factor’ that ensured a ‘steady state’ universe, one that had no beginning or end.

But in 1929, Edwin Hubble showed that the furthest galaxies were fleeing away from each other, just as the Big Bang model predicted.  So in 1931, Einstein embraced what would later be known as the Big Bang theory, saying, “This is the most beautiful and satisfactory explanation of creation to which I have ever listened.”  He referred to the ‘fudge factor’ to achieve a steady-state universe as the biggest blunder of his career.

As I’ll explain during the next couple of days, Einstein’s theories have been thoroughly proved and verified by experiments and measurements.  But there’s an even more important implication of Einstein’s discovery. Not only does the universe have a beginning, but time itself, our own dimension of cause and effect, began with the Big Bang.

That’s right — time itself does not exist before then.  The very line of time begins with that creation event.  Matter, energy, time and space were created in an instant by an intelligence outside of space and time.

About this intelligence, Albert Einstein wrote in his book “The World As I See It” that the harmony of natural law “Reveals an intelligence of such superiority that, compared with it, all the systematic thinking and acting of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection.”*

He went on to write, “Everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe–a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble.”*

Pretty significant statement, wouldn’t you say?

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s installment:  “Bird Droppings on my Telescope.”

Respectfully Submitted,

Perry Marshall

what existed before the big bang

    • Sham,

Nothing physical that we can detect existed before the Big Bang. My assertion is that God existed outside of and independently of the Big Bang. Something had to cause it.

      • Jimmy Howel says:

When God said…”Let there be light”…..he got it right the first time with a “Bang” that was “Big”

  2. Vatsalya says:

What is in the space ? Lots of it is filled with nothing. no air, no water, absolutely nothing. I am not able to understand what this nothingness means. My class mates say, “Just leave it, Vatsalya!” But how can I be at peace, without knowing all about space? Please make things clear to me. Thank you

    • Dabe says:

My friend, do not be to quick to judge because of your inability to see anything in that which you refer to as space. The space which you cannot see is filled with Ether so called by men such as physicists. The ether is invisible. But, I can assure you it is there. Thank you for your question.

      • Vatsalya says:

My friend Dabe, Ether is only a hypothetical medium, which is presumed to have filled the space. Will you please let me comprehend space, with some physical analoguous examples of real life? Thankyou

        • Hèctor P. Cabàn-Zeda says:

          Vatsalya:

You are absolutely right when you say that “ether” is a hypothetical medium. At the time its existence was proposed, physicists believed that in order for waves, such those of sound or light, to propagate they needed a medium. So they came up with the idea that the medium light need to propagate was “ether”. I won’t go into all the details of why this idea was abandoned, but you might want to do some research on a famous experiment done by Mssrs. Michelson and Morley at the start of last century.
However, in partial answer to your question, I would like to add that space, even if we perceive it as an empty void (not quite empty, actually, for there is dust mostly everywhere) is not nothing. It has physical characteristics. According to Einstein it can be stretched, compressed and bent by such things as gravitational, electric and magnetic fields. This effects have been experimentally verified many times now.
I hope I have shed some light into your question.

          • Vatsalya says:

Thank you Dear Hector and Dabe, I know that objects can be stretched, bent, and compressed by using gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields, But I fail to understand how space can be stretched, bent, and compressed . If space is bent, stretched, and compressed, will you please tell me how it will look ? And what will happen to time? Morover will our metabolic time clock be effected?

            Vatsalya.

        • Dabe says:

Thanks you for you opinion, but, I tend to accept Einstein relativity which required existence of ether. Einstein pondered whether to call it Matter or Ether, but supposed that would be resolved in later years.

Too, I subscribed to N. Tesla’s copper plate in lower atmosphere experiment as having proved ether existence. But, I will admit that the experiment did not provide useable electricity from the experiment, but did provide electricity.

I think Euclid’s geometry did not reqire existence of Ether. But that does not disprove it. I believe Einstein did not subcribe to Ether Space at first but later accepted it’s existence.

My opposite views seem to have bothered you a little. I did not send a reply to anger you, but to offer a different opinion.

          Thank you.

          • Hèctor P. Cabàn-Zeda says:

            Dear Dave:

First, I have no idea as to why you think Einstein’s Theory of Relativity requires the existence of “ether”.
Second, I am not familiar with N. Tesla’s copper plate experiment. Would you care to provide more information?
Third, I fail to see the connection between a geometrical system and the existence of something that is physical in nature.
Fourth, I do not know how you got the idea that I was bothered by your opposing views for I relish opposing views. It would be an extremely boring world if everyone had exactly the same opinions. Would not you agree?
            Cordially,

            Hèctor

i have always wondered what was before the big bang, which is thought to have started the universe.

    • pankaj says:

It is only a theorem explaining the present status of the universe, not the explanation of the origin of matter or energy. Matter is always there even before bing bang.

  4. thinker says:

according to einstein, it is matter grabbing space-time telling it how to curve and space-time grabbing matter telling it how to move…now gravity arises here and all other laws come to exist…if we visualize the space-time fabric, it feels as though the entire universe is resting on it. Now can there not be many such fabrics extending in all directions overlapping on another and forming multiple and parallel universes?what does einstein’s laws predict in the circumstances?

  5. Dennis Basson says:

Why all this speculation? All we want to find out (a)Who created Space?(b)Who created the atom (c)What was there before the big bang?(d)Why was it created? No one dead or alive can explain this.

  6. bleu blue blu... says:

If god made or created the Bing Bang, then who created god(humans did)?
We now for a fact, that nothing comes from nothing!
All I know is that the only thing god created is fear, terror, bloodshed, punishment, hatred etc,and ignorance, because if god came from anywhere IGNORANCE is his birthplace!

  7. Dabe says:

    Hector,

Correct me if I am wrong. In Newtons theory, he was only able to account for matter as a rigid object. In Relativity theory by Einstein, it detects matter as invisible space, thus Ether space. He was torn whether to call it Matter or Ether. Sorry to be so short, my sleep habits are out of whack.

The problem with communicating by text is each person has a tendance to interpret his way. His way may not reflect the intention of the writer.

The posts here are a little hard to follow the correct thread. I thought I was reponding to someone else. However, It does not upset me either that someone else answered.

If you don’t mind, I think I will drop out of the thread. It probably was not a good idea for us to start a subject of Ether here.

    Thanks and regards,

    Dabe

  8. Tim B says:

we could theoretically find a wormhole that would give us the illusion of time travel if we were to enter it and upon returning, find that the world had progressed hundreds of years in time. But we could never travel back, only forward. We conceptualize everything, even possibility, in the framework of teleology. It is inconceivable to us to reverse time. Doesnt this suggest that laws of the universe are outside the control of the originating factor? To suggest that a design could be conceived of, put into motion and then let go–out of control–would suggest universal predestination if intelligence was involved, otherwise, this creator might itself be left on the sidelines as the universe takes over. It implies therefore that such a creator is in control only if predistination was also a factor. The concept of omnipotence has to be balanced with the mythological concept of ‘the fall’, which every culture and creation myth in the world posits. Aristotle suggested an unmoved mover to explain the first movement. perhaps, the mover was remarkably unmoved by what chaos humanity could come up with in the cosmic dance. any thoughts?

    Dear Perry,

If you believe that Jesus Christ was/is god incarnate and purposely died on the cross to save mankind from eternal damnation, then please come out and say so. Or, if you believe this is another man made myth, please declare yourself. A simple unambiguous declaration either way it will clarify your intentions.

I’ve thinking about if the “big crunch” it’s de same that the “big bang”, if it’s the same, why the universe can’t be expansive?

energy cannot be created nor destroyed. This energy is what sparked the big bang and might be present before it. some peopel believe this energy to be god. is this true?

  17. Carl Penney says:

Einstein’s three papers were on the Special Theory of Relativity, Brownian Motion and the Photoelectric effect. He did not publish on quantum mechanics then, and in fact was always uncomfortable with quantum mechanics – hence his famous quote “God does not play dice with the Universe”. You must get your facts straight if you hope to influence other people.

  18. Sidenei Melo says:

Using my poor english, I’ll try to give my point of view. This is not a question, but a statement, or comment, from myself. “God”, is a word that…( I am not an atheist….) was invented to explain physical laws that rule the Universe. Religious people use to imagine God as a man-like entity, or someone that can be touched, due to impossibility on understanding anything related to Universe’s origin. Time is a condition only related to living beings. We need to give a “time” to the formation of galaxies, or the solar system, because there isn’t another way to study them.
Time of stars for example, is always conditioned to our lifetime, which is completely different. Years ago, scientists demonstrated that Universe is running to an end, This discovery made them shocked. Is it possible an end to something without beggining ? Only of one thing I am sure. From now to an
undefined time, scientists of all kinds, including mainly astronomers will study more and more, two elements, Time and Space. Stars die?. If they die, they are given to birth, therefore there is a beginning and an end. But they don’t die completely…. They are transformed into a dwarf star with a huge density. But they are at least, transformed, which are a particular element. No beginning and no end implies on a stable situation all the time….

  19. Don Swenson says:

The newest issue for science is the nature of our consciousness. What is consciousness? What does it encompass? Is consciousness distinct from matter/energy? Is consciousness a ‘thing’? Or is consciousness ‘spirit’?

How is life lived? Do we live our lives as ‘successive moments of NOW’? Does ‘time’ exist in the now?

The Big Bang is a concept from someone’s imagination. Is it valid as a now concept? Does God affect our consciousness in real time? Are we living in the Kingdom of God now?

    All readers,

    “Because if it was
expanding, it must have had a beginning and a beginner” , If this is true It should have an end and also the beginner should have an end.One more question is not answered till this time. How the beginner begins? If the beginner can begin itself the physical world also can begin itself. So more logical is to think the physical world has no beginning no ending like mathematical numbers, so there is no beginner.
